With the expansion of the residential swimming pools market the issue of swimming pool safety is becoming a commonly debated one. Regulations about how to best protect people from what is everyones summer favourite recreation are being considered by everybody, from central governments to private communities. In order to prevent this risks many things, from lifeguards in large, communal use, swimming pools to water treatment and other safety items available around the pool. Surprisingly, swimming pool safety fences are many times not only not required but when they do, very few times are their specifications to assure that they meet its purpose listed. Many issues such as minimum height, resistance, ease of climb, closing and locking systems are just not present. We consider that having a non performing safety fence may be even worse than not having one, for it creates a false feeling of safety that leads to a relaxed supervision.
Any swimming pool fence, to be considered safe must be of sufficient height, provide no hands or foot holds, be sturdy enough and its gate or gates must open AWAY from the swimming pool area and self close and latch. Nevertheless, a safety fence supplement but do not replace supervision of children.
